Everyone always wants the latest version of everything, and the mobile phone market is no different. The most recent chart from Android Developers shows that 52% of Android phones are running Froyo, and only .4% of the market has Gingerbread. A lot of sites love to compare these numbers to Apple’s, yet they are completely different playing fields. Apple has one, yes ONE model per year that they have complete control over. That and the fact that they manage their own updates are the two main reasons they have the most up to date version of their OS on their newest model and the one the year before. Android has hundreds of choices in regards to phones, all supplied by different hardware manufacturers and carriers. Most carriers even customize Android with their own custom UI and applications as well. A fair comparison would be to compare the Nexus phones with the Apple ones. Besides that, I personally feel that carriers are waiting on pushing Android 2.3 to phones because it looks like 2.4 is right around the corner.
