Android 4.4 KitKat is getting tougher with the help of Cat-better known as Caterpillar. Caterpillar is a company that is known for their construction products. However, in 2013 they started developing smartphones with the labor worker in mind. As a follow up to their Android smartphone-the B15-Cat has developed the “first rugged smartphone available globally to support KitKat.” The new device by Cat is called the B15Q and like any follow-up device, this one has hardware and software upgrades to it’s the older version.
The Cat B15 came out in 2013, with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Specs of the B15 included dust and water proofing, impact proof, a 4-inch display and a 5MP camera. Inside there was a MediaTek dual core 1GHz processor with 512 MB RAM, a 2000mAh Lithium battery and up to 32MB storage via Micro SD slot. There was also an AWS version released with very little difference to the original, and now they have the B15Q.
The B15Q steps it up a few notches with a MediaTek quad-core 1.3GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 4GB expandable internal storage, and a 4-inch Gorilla Glass 2 display. The display also has wet finger tracking, so there is no need to worry about not getting a reaction with a wet finger. The camera on the back is still 5MP, VGA front facing camera and the battery is still powered by a 2,000mAh battery. Just like its predecessor, the B15Q is dust, water and drop proof and cased in a silver anodized aluminum body. All of this proofing means the B15Q can be dropped from up to 1.8m and suffer no damage, can work under 1m of water for up to 30 minutes, and can work safely in temperatures ranging from -13 degrees Fahrenheit to 131 degrees Fahrenheit. There are some things that this version comes with that is different.
The B15Q comes with “Waves Audio” which is there to enhance sound. It is unclear if they take advantage of this for just music, or phone calls as well. Cat has also installed a dual noise cancelling microphone and Swiftkey keyboard on the B15Q. Which make this device comparable to many low range to mid range devices out there and adds the toughness labor workers really need.
As for a release date and pricing nothing has been announced. Currently, the device is listed as coming soon. There also is no word as to which carriers or where you can buy it just yet.
