It looks like Apple is planning to give a massive boost to the selfie camera on the iPhone 17 series. MacRumors has obtained a research note from Haitong Securities Apple analyst Jeff Pu with details regarding the cameras of the iPhone 17. The analyst suggests that the iPhone 17 is going to get an improved selfie camera – a massive 24MP sensor.
All iPhone 17 series models are again rumored to flaunt 24MP selfie lenses
According to Jeff Pu, all iPhone 17 series models expected to debut in 2025 will boast an improved 24MP selfie camera. The upgraded front-facing sensor will be present on the iPhone 17, 17 Slim, 17 Pro, and the 17 Pro Max. Furthermore, the source claims that it will be a six-piece lens.
It will certainly be a massive upgrade over the 12MP selfie sensors present on the current iPhone 15 lineup. Notably, the 12MP selfie camera lens on the iPhone 15 series utilizes 5P lens elements. Unfortunately, Pu didn’t provide other details regarding the 24MP lens, like the sensor size and pixel size.
It’s worth mentioning that the well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also suggested the same earlier in January. He also expects that Apple will incorporate an improved 24MP selfie camera on at least one model in the iPhone 17 series.
The upgraded lens should offer significantly improved selfie photos
The iPhone 17 series users can expect the 24MP front-facing lens to provide significantly improved selfie photos than the iPhone 15 range. It should be able to flaunt improved low-light photos as well via the pixel binning technology. However, the low-light images will be equivalent to an 8MP photo on a 24MP selfie camera.
The 24MP camera could be a wide-angle lens, which is ideal for group selfies. It will also let you crop in for more conventional photos. That said, you can expect sharper selfies with more details than the 12MP sensor on the iPhone 15 lineup. This will surely complement the rumored 48MP triple rear camera module on the iPhone 17 series.
