Google continues to work on enhancing Gemini’s functionality through new extensions. Currently, the AI-powered assistant lets you access your YouTube Music playlists easily. Now, it looks like Gemini will be getting Spotify integration in the near future.
The Gemini extensions allow you to request actions on your content in other apps and services. It’s a convenient way to manage which services you want to use through the assistant. For example, enabling the Workspace extension will allow Gemini to perform actions on your emails, such as generating summaries. In May, Gemini received the YouTube Music extension for media playback control via voice commands.
Gemini’s Spotify extension could let you control music and podcast playback
However, there are likely users of other music streaming platforms who would like to be able to access their songs or playlists from within the assistant. With that in mind, it looks like Google is working on Gemini integration with Spotify. This would be the first third-party service to get its own extension.
As spotted by Android Authority, there are references to the Spotify extension in the code of the latest Google app update (v15.30.27.29). The feature is partially implemented, allowing you to force it to appear in the extensions list. You can even enable the toggle and use some of its features. However, there is still work to be done so that everything works correctly.
Currently, asking Gemini to play a song or podcast on Spotify will first show a YouTube Music card before starting playback on Spotify. However, there are cool features like being able to start music playback in the background without launching the app. It is not yet known if the Spotify extension will support a list of prompts as extensive as YouTube Music’s.
The source also spotted several potential new Gemini extensions in development. The AI-powered assistant could receive integration with Google Home, Phone app, and Utilities. Google is likely saving some important announcements related to new Gemini extensions for the coming weeks.
