It looks Google TV is about to get out of the Honeycomb phase. Google TV has been in a desperate need for a good push. It was Google’s attempt at the living room, which hasn’t really panned out all that well. Google’s keynote has just finished not to long ago and there were basically no announcements for Android or Google TV. But it’s just surfaced from LG that their Google TV’s will be getting updated to Android 4.2.2 in the third quarter.
Right now, LG is the only manufacturer still selling Google TV-enabled TV’s right now. That includes models GA7900, and GA6400 which were announced this year and the G2 from last year will all be getting some Jelly Bean love soon.
According to LG’s press release. “In addition to boosting overall performance, the update will enable customers to enjoy more applications, including games that provide a greater level of interactivity and advanced graphics.”It will also support the Android Native Development Kit so “smartphone apps designed using the NDK will also run on Google TV with no modifications needed”.
This is the first real update to Google TV, well ever. It originally shipped and was announced with Android 3.2 – Honeycomb, which hit Google TV devices in November of 2011. It’s great to see Google TV getting updated to Android 4.2.2, which is the current version of Android. What will be interesting is if we see any other pushes for Google TV soon.
