OnePlus has confirmed it will launch the OnePlus Open Apex Edition foldable Android smartphone in the Crimson Shadow color option. The Apex Edition belongs to the OnePlus Open series, whose first device won the “Foldable of the Year” title in 2023.

Is the OnePlus Open Apex Edition a second-generation foldable smartphone?

OnePlus launched the OnePlus Open last year. The first-generation foldable Android smartphone is available in Emerald Dusk with a glass back, and Voyager Black with a vegan leather option.

With the OnePlus Open Apex Edition, OnePlus is taking a step further. It is important to note that the Apex Edition isn’t necessarily a second-generation of the OnePlus Open. However, OnePlus has made several modifications and some minor upgrades, indicated Kinder Liu, President and COO of OnePlus,

“With the updated OnePlus Open Apex Edition, we continue to push boundaries with enhanced features, delivering a luxurious experience that embodies our ‘Never Settle’ mantra.”

This strongly suggests that OnePlus is attempting to re-launch the OnePlus Open. This time around, the company could offer the device in new markets, with slightly tweaked pricing.

OnePlus has, however, made several aesthetic and cosmetic changes. This includes a new iteration of the vegan leather back cover, which now showcases a diamond-like pattern.

Specifications and features of the “Apex Edition”

The OnePlus Open Apex Edition could be the first-generation OnePlus foldable smartphone in a new avatar. Hence, it is highly likely the company may have used the same hardware.

If the rumors are accurate, the OnePlus Open Apex Edition features a 7.8-inch foldable LTPO3 AMOLED display with a resolution of 2208 x 1840 pixels and a refresh rate of 120Hz. The outer, non-foldable display could be a 6.3-inch AMOLED screen with a 2484 x 1116 pixels resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate.

Back when OnePlus launched its first foldable smartphone, the company had opted for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. While the same SoC could power the Apex Edition, OnePlus could pair it with up to 16GB RAM and up to UFS 4.0 storage.

OnePlus has reportedly stressed that the Apex Edition pays homage to the iconic Hasselblad 503CW 60 Years Victor Red Edition. Hence, the camera setup, co-developed with Hasselblad, would include a 50 MP primary sensor, a 48 MP ultra-wide lens, and a 64 MP telephoto lens.

One of the limiting factors of the first-generation OnePlus Open was its 4800mAh battery. It does support up to 100W wired Fast Charging. However, several users wished the device had a larger battery, which is possible for the company.

The original OnePlus Open is available in the US at around $1,699 for both iterations. Some reports suggest that OnePlus might not jack up the pricing of the Apex Edition.
