Today, Sprint and Samsung are beginning to roll out Android 4.4.2 to their own Galaxy Mega. The Galaxy Mega was announced last summer and was available on AT&T and Sprint. We reviewed it last summer as well and were quite pleased with how well it worked, given it’s size and it having a large 720p display. Definitely not a high-end device, but good enough for those that just wanted a big phone. AT&T’s Galaxy Mega got their update last week, and now it’s Sprint’s turn. The update to Android 4.4.2 sees lots of new features including Cloud Print, Immersive Mode and much more. But that’s just from Google. There’s even more, on the Samsung side. Now you aren’t getting the newest version of Touchwiz, but you are getting some fixes and new features, which is great considering it’s a year old mid-range device.
So far there’s no official changelog from Sprint, but we can look at AT&T’s changelog since they should be identical aside from network stuff. We’re looking at On-device memory status and profiling, Camera shortcut in Lock screen, Unified Location Menu, User can set preferred Network & Automatic in security policy update, Home and Message application default option, GMS applications update (GMS 4.4.2_r2)., Wireless Printing enabled, Video player closed captioning, and Additional application and settings options. Of course we’ll probably see some Sprint specific updates and features as well.
If you’re on Sprint with their Samsung Galaxy Mega, you may want to start mashing that “Check for Updates” button and see if you can pull down that update. It’ll definitely be a pretty large update. We don’t have an exact size yet, but I’d venture to guess in the 500MB range. This update will bring you to build L600VPUANE4, and bring you to the latest version of Android, or at least the latest dessert. As Android 4.4.3 is now the latest.
