Here come some more KitKat updates from Samsung today. Earlier, Samsung rolled out the KitKat update for the Galaxy Mega on Sprint. Now we’re looking at the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini on Verizon getting some KitKat love too. Both devices are getting Android 4.4.2 but are not getting the latest version of Touchwiz which you see on the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy Tab S. This shouldn’t be a surprise as that’s never happened before with the Galaxy S, Galaxy S2 or other Samsung devices. The updates should be rolling out now to all the Galaxy S3’s and Galaxy S4 Mini’s on Verizon. The update will likely be pretty large, so you’ll want to be sure you’re on WiFi unless you still have unlimited data.
With the KitKat update you should be getting Immersive Mode, Cloud Printing and a slew of other features and bug fixes on these two devices. If you want to see the full changelog and support pages from Verizon, you can see the Samsung Galaxy S3 here and Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini here.
It’s definitely great to see Samsung supporting their older devices, especially the Galaxy S3. As that one is about two years old now, and it launched on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. And it’s made it all the way to Android 4.4 KitKat. I wonder how much further the Galaxy S3 will go before it’s retired? It’ll be interesting to see. It’s also great to see their older mid-range devices, like the Galaxy S4 Mini getting an update to KitKat. Although we would have liked to see it with higher end specs, the Galaxy S4 Mini is still a very capable device, and one that I’m sure plenty of people have. How many of you have either the Galaxy S3 or the Galaxy S4 Mini on Verizon? Are you excited about this update?
