While everyone’s expecting to hear when their devices are getting updated to the newest version of the Android operating system called Marshmallow, some users will surely be disappointed to find out that some of their devices won’t get updated anymore. There are some devices that skip a few minor versions of Android and get updated to the most recent one, so the release of new versions is a good excuse to ask companies if some devices will follow along this path. Sadly, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 will get stuck on the version of Android that it’s currently running, which is actually the version that it was running when it launched.
In January 2014, Samsung introduced a new lineup of tablets called Galaxy Tab Pro, it consisted of three devices with screen sizes of 8.4 inches, 10.1 inches and 12.2 inches. All of those screens featured a very high pixel density and very good specs at that time. The two smaller models were replaced quite soon, as the company introduced their flagship lineup of tablets, called Galaxy Tab S, less than 6 months later. While the design of the newer tablets was refined and some internals were updated, the most noticeable change was that Samsung now used high-resolution AMOLED screens.
When a Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 owner contacted Samsung through their official Twitter account in the UK regarding an update to Lollipop or Marshmallow for this particular tablet, he got this response: “We really don’t like bringing you news you don’t want to hear, but the TabPRO 8.4 will not be getting Lollipop”. So there you have it, the Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 is stuck on Android 4.4 KitKat. Perhaps only the UK version of the tablet will get stuck on this software, but so far, it doesn’t seem likely that other regional versions will be updated either. The Galaxy Tab S tablets, on the other hand, are already running Lollipop and even the Galaxy Note 3 phablet, which was introduced earlier and inspired the design of the Tab Pro, was updated to Lollipop as well. Users of this tablet could get newer versions of the OS unofficially with custom ROMs to get the new functions and even increased security.
