Samsung has launched two new security features for Galaxy devices to enhance user privacy and data protection. The company, on Wednesday, introduced “Quick Share’s Private Sharing” and “Enhanced Data Protection with End-to-End Encryption” to address growing concerns over data privacy and ownership.
Private sharing: Secure file sharing
As our lives become increasingly digital, the risk of data breaches and privacy invasions has escalated. Samsung’s new security features are designed to mitigate these risks. The first feature, Quick Share’s Private Sharing, enables users to share files securely.
Samsung’s Quick Share now features Private Sharing, a tool designed for privacy-preserving file transfers. This function allows users to share files securely, ensuring that only intended recipients can access the shared data. With Private Sharing, users can set permissions and expiration dates for the data, providing an additional layer of security.
For instance, when sharing personal photos or videos, users can grant read-only access and restrict the ability to re-share the content. The sender can revoke access at any time and track when the recipient views the file. Private Sharing supports the transfer of up to 20 files, with a total size of 200MB, all encrypted using blockchain technology.
To use Private Sharing, users need to select the file, tap the Share icon, choose Quick Share, and turn on Private Sharing from the options menu.
Enhanced data protection: Safeguarding data in the cloud
Samsung has also introduced Enhanced Data Protection, offering robust security for data stored in the Samsung Cloud. This feature, available on the Galaxy S24 and later models, employs end-to-end encryption (E2EE) to protect user data. E2EE ensures that data can only be decrypted on the user’s device, making it inaccessible to anyone, including Samsung.
Enhanced Data Protection prompts users to create a recovery code, adding an extra layer of security. Users can access the Samsung Cloud app to activate this feature, navigate to Settings, and enable Enhanced Data Protection. Alternatively, it can be found in the device’s Security and Privacy settings
Samsung continues to lead in the technology space by prioritizing user security and privacy by addressing the evolving concerns of digital life and providing robust solutions for data protection.
