Users of unauthorized controllers on Xbox will soon see their devices stop working. As it looks like Microsoft is beginning to block the use of these devices on its consoles. Notifications are being seen by users when they try to connect such a device. With an alert telling them that the connected controller isn’t supported by the Xbox hardware.
As of right now it seems that any devices which will be impacted are still usable. However they won’t be for long. With Microsoft set to shut off support in the “next two weeks.” Anyone using a third-party controller that isn’t authorized may want to start looking at other options so they’re prepared with an alternative when the block comes into play. Worth noting is that this change won’t impact third-party controllers which are officially licensed. This includes SCUF controllers. And should include any third-party controller that is part of Microsoft’s Xbox partner program. Like those from PowerA and other similar brands.
Blocking unauthorized Xbox controllers may be an attempt to block cheat devices
Although it seems strange for Microsoft to start blocking these types of devices now, as The Verge notes it might be an attempt to stop the use of cheat devices. Such as those that come from brands like Cronus and XIM.
It’s unclear though if that’s the case. As it’s also possible that Microsoft may be trying to push consumers to buy accessories that are in the partner program. Once the block goes through, it may also impact those who use devices like arcade sticks and other adapters that are simply used to make controllers compatible with the console hardware.
Microsoft hasn’t given an official statement yet on what constitutes as unauthorized. But companies like SCUF have taken to social media to assure customers that its controllers will still work. So it seems likely it won’t impact any partner devices.
